Macaroni Minute

By Jill Lynch, Editor & Publisher Macaroni Kid Cincinnati Metro July 27, 2012

It's finally here... after four long years of waiting, the 2012 London Summer Olympics is upon us!  What can be more exciting that the 'thrill of victory and the agony of defeat'?  (Can you picture the ski jumper twirling off the end of the ski ramp used in the NBC coverage from decades ago?  Am I dating myself? :)

As a spectator, I am ready.  The DVR is cleaned out, and I have HOURS of space available to record.  I have my schedule ready so I know exactly which days I'll be looking for my favorite events. (See article below with details on the events being televised each day.  Please check your local broadcasters for times and coverage.)

And, as a parent, I am excited as well.  My daughter is finally old enough, and this may very well be the first Olympics that she actually remembers as an adult.  I look forward to the conversations we can have about hard work, persistence, success & failure, and the meaning of competition & sportsmanship.

In honor of the Olympics, the Cincinnati Zoo has gone hog wild and put together their ZOOlympics, which runs from July 27 - August 12.  The long list of daily events include Tortoise Races, Elephant Weight Lifting, Lemur Gymnastics, Cougar Long Jump, Chicken Race (Children's Zoo), Cheetah 100 Meter Dash, Mini Pig Hurdles, Sea Lion Volleyball, and the Red Panda Long Jump.

Now, it may not be an Olympic Event, but the Cincinnati Parks have started taking registrations for their FAMILY AMAZING RACE 2012 to be held at Bicentennial Park and Yeatman's Cove on September 30th. (You will need the endurance of an Olympic Athlete to win!)  Family teams can consist of up to 5 members, 2 adults maximum and includes children ages 5 through 17. Prizes will be awarded!  Click on the link above.  Hurry and register -- only 48 teams total will be accepted.

As always, to see more about what is going on in West Chester/Mason area, check out Marie's West Chester/Mason MK newsletter.  If you see a kid or family-friendly event happening, please submit events so that others can also learn what is going on in our great city. And, if you know someone who is interested in subscribing, they can subscribe directly here.

While there are a lot of events listed below for this week, visit our
Cincinnati Metro calendar page for the most up-to-date listing of local events to do with your kids and family.  And, just a note... when you click into the MK Calendar, you can see the events BY DAY and can easily move from day to day, instead of sifting through a long list below.  (Check it out!  It's what I personally use to find things to do each day for my family.)

Have a WONDERFUL week!
