Who can forget reading one of Shakespeare's works for the first time?  Most of us were introduced to his literary masterpieces while in school, complete with the old world language, the complex cast of characters, and the intricate layers of meaning upon meaning.

Shakespeare wasn't easy for this young reader.  I still remember having to read aloud, trying to manage the Old World English while instilling emotion and meaning in what I was reading.   I'm not sure if I ever truly understood what I was saying or not.  However, when Shakespeare's dramas were finally brought to life, suddenly, and almost magically, they all made sense!  Especially Romeo & Juliet!

What woman hasn't stood up and, while grasping at her heart, recited with full passion and emotion "Oh Romeo, Romeo, where for art thou, Romeo?"  When it comes to Romeo & Juliet -- it's innocence, it's raw emotion, it's depth of despair, it's simplicity -- one can understand why this classic tragedy is often referred to as "The greatest love story of all times."

Now, just in time for Valentine's Day, the Cincinnati Ballet brings home this classic story of innocent lovers caught in the middle of the bitter feuding of their two families, the Capulet's and the Montague's.

Cincinnati Ballet’s CEO and Artistic Director, Victoria Morgan, captures the story of the star-crossed lovers with her unique blend of dance and drama. Shakespeare’s tragic tale, written nearly 420 years ago, has not waned in its ability to captivate audiences with the unfolding of a great romance destined for the grave. Morgan’s choreography, both sumptuous and intimate, brings raw emotion to the forefront as the young couple unknowingly marches toward their fate.

“Shakespeare was a theatrical storyteller,” says Morgan. “A brilliant, evocative writer, with double entendres and multiple layers of meaning through words, yet Romeo and Juliet at its very essence is a story so raw and visceral, focused on young, passionate, and obsessive love caught in the conflict between two rival houses. For me, it’s impossible to explore the story without imagining movement – whether it’s the slash and whip of a sword, a gut-wrenching cry to the heavens, or an eager embrace – Shakespeare provokes a reaction. It is a joy to give life to his words through dance.”

Sergei Prokofiev’s breathtaking score played live by the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Cincinnati Ballet’s Music Director, Carmon DeLeone, accompanies Morgan’s choreography.

“We are blessed with volumes of great music to dance to, but few scores come close to the dramatic and hauntingly beautiful nature of Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet. There are moments of such innocent joyous simplicity and also those brazen and horrific off-balanced chords that proclaim violence and certain death. It is a rich and intimidating score that demands pure intention and a brutal honesty from the choreographer. And to hear it played by our amazing Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra will make for a perfect storm in the theater this Valentine’s Day weekend,” says Morgan.

Join the Cincinnati Ballet for Romeo & Juliet this Valentine's Day weekend with performances on February 14 (8pm), February 15 (8pm), and February 16 (2pm and 8pm) at the Aronoff Center for the Arts.  Audiences have four opportunities to see the greatest love story of all time come to life through dance with live instrumentation by the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra.

To purchase tickets, call 513.621.5282, visit cballet.org or visit the Cincinnati Ballet Box Office at 1555 Central Parkway, Cincinnati, OH 45214.  Tickets start at $31.

On opening night, you will also have the opportunity to MEET THE ARTISTS.
Cincinnati Ballet is pleased to offer Meet the Artists, a pre-performance discussion series where audiences will have the opportunity to meet choreographers, dancers and members of the creative team.  This event is free to anyone with a Romeo & Juliet ticket, and will take place at 7pm on February 14th.  Attendees must present a Romeo & Juliet ticket for admission.
