CRAFT: Yarn Eggs

So easy to make, and great for fine motor skill development.

April 2, 2012
I remember making these when I was little.  And, my kids and I had a blast getting our hands messy with glue and peeling the dried glue off of our fingers.  (Brings back fun memories from when I was a kid!)

Supplies:
Yarn (any color)
White glue
Balloons
Shallow Dish
Waxed paper

Directions:
1) Blow up as many balloons as you want to make into yarn eggs.  I used water balloons, but larger balloons can also be used.

2) Pre-cut yarn to the length you want.  (I used 5 lengths of one of my arms for these in the picture.)

3) Mix equal parts of white glue and water in a shallow bowl.

4) Place yarn in the bowl to soak up glue/water mixture.  Keep track of the ends though, so you don't have to search through a gluey mess to find it. (I made that mistake once!)

5) Start wrapping the yarn in any pattern around the balloon.  Younger kids might need help getting this started.  Be sure each end of the yarn comes in contact with another piece of yarn so that it isn't 'dangling' by itself.

6) Place on waxed paper to dry.  I rotated mine a couple of times as they were drying so that the underside also dried completely.

Hint: when changing directions, hold the yarn under your thumb until it is covered by another round of yarn.

That's it.  I hung these from the light in our kitchen. And, we will make more to hang throughout the house.  (Not sure about leaving these outside. If you have experience with that, leave us a comment!)
